After Care

Step Three

Looking After Your Tattoo

Get to Know the Right Care

Before you leave the studio, your new tattoo should be covered and should be kept in place for at least an hour. This is to keep it clean and protected from outside elements, afterall you have an “open wound”.

Your tattoo artist or customer desk personnel will explain how to look after your tattoo and give you recommendation about what creams to apply; what activities should be avoided such as sun beds and swimming. We carry many aftercare products in stock that we have chosen for their excellent qualities.

Generally we recommend:

  • Gently washing the tattoo with antimicrobial soap and water and pat dry.
  • Apply recommended ointment and cover again with either second skin or glad wrap. Your tattoo is recommended to stay covered for 2-3 days. If using glad wrap change the cover twice daily repeating the same routine as at the first time wash.
  • After the covered period is finished keep applying an ointment until the tattoo is healed.
The healing process usually takes 3-4 weeks.

If your tattoo scabs a bit don’t worry. It’s normal. But never pick, scratch, or peel it. You could get an infection or remove the color. If you think your tattoo is infected, or isn’t healing properly, let us know and go see your doctor.

Long Term Care

Once your tattoo has healed, you move into maintenance mode. Though you don’t have to specifically care for it after a month or so, there are things you can do to prevent the ink from degrading.

You should

  • Keep it clean. Wash your skin daily with a gentle, unscented soap.
  • Always protect your tattoo from sun by applying sufficient SPF protection. Despite sun does not erase your tattoo, so it does change condition of your skin and your skin is the active ‘canvas’ for your tattoo.
  • Stay hydrated. Drink plenty of water to keep your skin moisturized.
  • Watch what you wear. Wear SPF clothing so the sun won’t fade your tattoo.
  • Avoid excess weight gain or loss. You could stretch out or distort the tattoo.

Always use a mild, fragrance-free soap or a specially formulated tattoo cleanser to clean the area. Your tattoo artist can recommend a tattoo-specific cleanser.
