Pricing and Rates

Setting a price for a tattoo is like asking the proverbial “How long is a piece of string?” There are many factors that will influence the price. Complexity of the tattoo design, size, location on the body are but a few contributing factors.

Therefore, most commonly the price of a tattoo is based on an hourly rate of an artist. These are then set by the artists themselves. For larger work we offer discounted day rates and occasionally artists set a special price for flash designs.

In addition to our tattoo work we also perform body piercing. Our on-site piercing artist is available without prior booking. Please peruse our piercing services performed and related charges.

For artist hourly rates, day deals or special projects pricing, please contact the studio by calling 07 579 0080 or contacting the specific artist.

Minimum Age Policy

YOU NEED TO BE 18 YEARS OF AGE OR OLDER.

Whilst Tauranga Coucil does not stipulate minimum age when it is permissable to get a tattoo, we fly on the side of caution. Bohemian Tattoo Artists subscribe to a voluntary code of practice of the tattoo industry, where it is generally agreed that the minimum age is 18 years. This may be relaxed in extenuating circumstances, such as tribal or cultural reasons. You would need to discuss this with the management of Bohemian Tattoo Arts, prior commencement of any work.

About Tattoo Removals

Please remember that tattoo removal can be a long journey. It’s crucial to maintain your health and diligently follow all aftercare instructions.

Due to the nature of laser science, not all lasers can remove all ink colours. Consequently, some colours may not be completely removed by laser. If you have any questions, please contact our tattoo removal specialist.

Will the laser completely remove my tattoo?

Most tattoos can be significantly faded, and many can be fully removed after a series of treatments. While tattoo removal can be unpredictable, I will provide a quote based on all relevant factors. Some tattoos are easier to treat than others, depending on:
Colour and type of ink used
Depth of the pigment
Age of the tattoo
Location on the body, your general health, and whether you are a smoker or non-smoker
Whether it was done professionally
Adherence to aftercare

Professional tattoos typically require more sessions than amateur ones. We’ll discuss your unique case during your consultation so you know what to expect. For cover-up projects, we usually anticipate 2–4 sessions, depending on the tattoo’s colour density. If you wish, I can arrange a dual consultation with our tattoo cover-up artists to give you a clearer understanding of the entire process.

How much does it hurt?

Laser tattoo removal can be uncomfortable, often described as feeling like an elastic band snapping against the skin. However, pain tolerance varies for each person, and we provide cooling to help manage discomfort.

The good news is that laser sessions are very quick, and we can take as many breaks as you need. We’ll also perform a test patch first to assess your pain tolerance and adjust the settings to make the experience more bearable while remaining effective.

I’ll discuss pain management options with you during your consultation.

Do I need a consultation first?

For small projects, we can conduct a consultation immediately before treatment to ensure there are no
contraindications and that you understand the process. For small, mostly black tattoos, a picture sent to my email or Instagram is sufficient.

For larger projects, YES, a FREE consultation is required before treatment. It’s essential for your safety and helps us create the right plan for your skin and tattoo.

During your consultation, we’ll cover:
Expected results
Estimated number of sessions
Any medications, skin conditions, or health issues you need to disclose
Your goals (full removal, lightening for a cover-up, etc.)

If everything looks good, we can often begin your first treatment right after the consultation!

After the removal session

After your laser treatment, the area may feel like a mild sunburn. You might notice:
Redness, swelling, or itching
Blistering (ideally does not happen, but it may)
Scabbing or light pinpoint bleeding
These side effects usually subside within a few days, though some symptoms can last longer depending on your body’s healing response. I’ll apply a soothing ointment and protective dressing after each session, and you’ll receive detailed aftercare instructions to take home.

For 48 hours after the session, drink plenty of water, treat the area as an open wound, and avoid the gym, sauna, pools, or spas. After 48 hours, maintain a healthy diet, exercise, and KEEP THE TREATED AREA FROM SUN EXPOSURE! If you cannot cover the treated area, always apply sunscreen with 30+ SPF.

Proper aftercare is crucial for optimal results, preventing infection, and minimizing the risk of skin changes.

Is scarring or skin damage possible?

While very rare, there’s a small chance of:
Temporary changes in skin pigment (either lighter or darker)
Scarring, which is uncommon but possible—especially if aftercare instructions aren’t followed closely

Rest assured, our tattoo removal specialist is trained to prioritise your skin’s health every step of the way.
